Gay Blood Ban

Updated June 2009 – See below

My Blood, Not Good Enough

Launched in January 2008 by Rob, our chair, the campaign brings gay and
bisexual men closer to being allowed to give Blood in Scotland. Presenting a
petition containing 1290 signatures to the Scottish Parliament, we hope that the
blood service, the Scottish Government and the media will realise that we cannot
go on like this. Men who have sex with men should not be auto-barred from
donating blood, people should be assessed on their lifestyle and the risks they
take, e.g. multiple partners, not using condoms etc.

The Scottish Parliament asked for submissions from:

National Union of Students

Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood Tissues and Organs (SaBTO)

Scottish Government

Bloodban

Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service

Equality Network letter

Terrence Higgins Trust

Update – June 2009 – The Scottish Parliament have put the petition on hold in order to wait for the preliminary Health Protection Agency report next year.

We will update you as soon as we know!
